VCB selection data for RFQ

How to Select a Medium Voltage Vacuum Circuit Breaker for New Switchgear or Replacement

A technically complete RFQ begins with electrical ratings, installation type and cabinet interface—not a model name alone. Send the five groups below so our engineers can recommend a compatible VCB and purchasing can compare quotations on the same scope.

01 Installation type and project scope
State indoor withdrawable or handcart, indoor side-mounted, three-position GIS, or outdoor. Identify the switchgear type and whether the requirement is for a new panel, OEM assembly, retrofit or direct replacement.
02 System voltage, load current and fault duty
Provide rated voltage, frequency, continuous current, short-circuit breaking current, short-time withstand current and duration, insulation level and required operating sequence.
03 Primary connection and switchgear dimensions
Show phase spacing, contact or terminal size and direction, mounting centres, handcart or chassis width, cabinet width and depth, clearances, bushings and the earthing connection.
04 Operating mechanism and control circuit
Specify charging-motor, closing-coil and tripping-coil voltage, AC or DC supply, secondary plug and pinout, auxiliary contacts, interlocks, position indication and operating sequence.
05 Replacement details, quantity and accessories
For replacement work, attach the complete old model, nameplate, drawings, installed photographs and measured dimensions. State quantity, required accessories, retained parts and document requirements.

Engineer and buyer questions

Medium Voltage Vacuum Circuit Breaker Selection FAQ

Answers to common VCB selection, replacement, standards and RFQ questions. Use the product catalogue above for model-specific ratings and dimensional drawings.

01How do I choose the correct voltage, current and short-circuit rating for a VCB?

Select rated voltage and insulation level from the network maximum voltage, rated current from the continuous load and temperature conditions, and short-circuit breaking and withstand ratings from the system fault study. Also specify frequency, short-circuit duration, making current and operating sequence. These electrical ratings establish duty, but the installation type, dimensions, primary connections, control voltage and interlocks must also match the switchgear.

02What is the difference between fixed, side-mounted and withdrawable vacuum circuit breakers?

A fixed VCB is bolted or mounted in one service position. A side-mounted VCB uses a cabinet-specific lateral orientation and terminal layout. A withdrawable VCB is installed on a handcart or chassis that moves between connected, test and isolated positions. The three arrangements use different mounting, primary and secondary connections and interlocks, so they are not interchangeable solely because their kV, A and kA ratings match.

03What information is required to quote a replacement vacuum circuit breaker?

Send the manufacturer, complete model or catalog number, serial number if available, clear nameplate photographs and all electrical ratings. Include the switchgear type, original drawings, front and side photographs, phase spacing, primary contacts, handcart or chassis dimensions, cabinet width and depth, control voltage, secondary plug and pinout, interlocks, accessories and quantity. This information is needed to check electrical and mechanical compatibility together.

04Can a vacuum circuit breaker from another manufacturer replace the existing breaker?

Yes, but only after the replacement has been engineered and confirmed as mechanically and electrically compatible. The review must cover voltage and fault ratings, overall dimensions, primary and secondary disconnects, handcart or chassis, racking positions, shutters, grounding, control wiring and safety interlocks. If a direct fit is not available, the offer should clearly identify any retrofit parts, compartment modifications, testing and installation work required.

05Which standards apply to medium-voltage vacuum circuit breakers?

IEC 62271-100 is the principal international product standard for three-phase AC circuit breakers installed indoors or outdoors on systems above 1 kV. A project may also specify local standards, utility requirements, test reports or a particular IEC edition. State the required standard and edition in the RFQ, and confirm the compliance and certification scope for the selected VCB model before ordering.

06What control voltage and operating-mechanism details should be specified?

State whether the mechanism uses spring energy storage or another drive type, then list the AC or DC voltage for the charging motor, closing coil and tripping coil. Also specify the secondary plug and pinout, auxiliary-contact quantity, anti-pumping and trip-circuit requirements, local or remote operation, position indication, interlocks and operating sequence. For replacements, include the existing wiring diagram and connector photographs.

07When should an outdoor VCB be used instead of an indoor VCB?

Use an outdoor VCB when the breaker is installed in an exposed substation, distribution-line or industrial yard environment and needs outdoor insulation, terminals, a mounting structure and a weather-protected mechanism. Specify altitude, ambient temperature, pollution level, wind or seismic duty, clearances and terminal layout. Use an indoor VCB when the breaker is installed inside a protected switchgear enclosure with a matched cabinet interface.

08What should be included in a vacuum circuit breaker RFQ?

Include project location and application, required standard, installation type, rated voltage, frequency, current, insulation level, short-circuit breaking and withstand duty, operating sequence, control voltage, dimensions and primary and secondary interfaces. Add quantity, accessories, spare parts, drawings, test and inspection requirements, document language, delivery destination and requested schedule. For a replacement, attach the existing nameplate, drawings, photographs and measurements.
